ELMONT, N.Y. — Bobby McMann will not be part of the Toronto Maple Leafs’ short-term plans after the rookie forward was injured during the team's 7-2 loss to the New York Islanders on Tuesday

"He aggravated the previous knee injury that he had," Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said. "We don't know the extent of it yet but he's going to head back to Toronto and won't be available for the rest of the trip."

McMann was called up just four days ago and was put into a third-line role over the last pair of games, skating primarily with Sam Lafferty and William Nylander. The rookie recorded his first NHL assist on Tuesday when he helped set up Lafferty's tally that opened the scoring.

The 26-year-old was held out of the team's practice at UBS Arena on Tuesday and the club skated with just 12 forwards, including seldom-used forward Wayne Simmonds.

With McMann out of the lineup, Keefe is not sure yet if the club will dress 11 forwards and seven defensemen, insert Simmonds into the lineup or call up another forward.

"We're going to talk about it. We weren't quite sure (when we started practice) what McMann's status was going to be and so we didn't adjust to anything," Keefe said. "We just wanted to go out and practice today, get on the plane and sort things out."

McMann suffered a knee injury while with the Toronto Marlies and played in two games in his second stint with the Leafs.

While with the Marlies this season, McMann has 21 goals and eight assists in 30 games.
